“Bless the Lord, O my soul. O Lord my God, thou are very great: thou are clothed with honour and majesty. Who covered thyself with light as with a garment: who stretchest out the heavens like a curtain:” (Psalms 104: 1-2 KJV)
“Oh that men would praise the Lord for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men! And let them sacrifice the sacrifices of thanksgiving, and declare his works with rejoicing.” (Psalms 107: 21-22 KJV)
The bible tells us that we are to praise the Lord. Psalms 150 says that, “everything that hath breath, praise the Lord.” There are approximately 250 times that the Bible tells us to praise the Lord. Apparently that’s an important aspect of our walk with Christ.
Declare God’s Greatness
Praising God entails two parts. The first part is evidenced in Psalms 104. We are to declare the greatness of God and list the reasons he is to be praised. The psalmist declares that God is great. He says that God is clothed with honour and majesty. Many other verses in the Bible also list why God is worthy of praise. Psalms is full of many verses that list the greatness of God and why he deserves to be praised. Turning again to Psalms 150, verse 2, the psalmist tells us that we are to praise God for his “acts of power” and his “surpassing greatness.” So what is the second part of praising God?
Reciting His Works
The second verse of today tells us exactly what the second part of praising God is. Declare his works. We are to list some of the great works that God has done for man. This is an overlooked part of praising God but it is vital. Why? It reminds us of the might of the God that we serve. Nothing will remind you of the power of God like brining to mind his mighty works. Our God created Earth, the sun, the moon and stars, and the heavens that hold them. (Genesis 1) He created man from the dust of the earth. (Genesis 2:7) He made the sun stand still in the sky. (Joshua 10: 13-14) He was made man and born to a virgin. (Matthew 1: 23) and he died and rose again! (Mark 16) How much more powerful a God can you serve? Praising God is not something that should just come before we ask for something but should happen on its own and spontaneously. The more you remind yourself of God’s awesome power while praising him, the easier it will be to remember that he is powerful enough to deal with anything you might encounter when it comes. Have a great day and God bless!
