Rendering beef tallow is a great way to add some fats into your diet and is a homesteading skill that I hope to add to my tool kit soon. Beef tallow can be used for so many things:
- making candles
- making soap
- cooking
- and more
Ashley, of The Browning Homestead, has a great post that will give you all the information you need to start rendering your own tallow for all the uses you can find around the homestead. And lest you think this is only for those raising their own beef or living in the country with lots of land and hunting, let me just point out that if you find a fellow homesteader or rancher in your area who is planning to butcher a cow you can likely purchase some of the fat or even score it for free! Many butcher shops sell fat trimmings as well, but I would be hesitant to go that route since I don’t know where the meat came from or what it was fed. Some things can be stored in fat cells (fat soluble substances) which means that you would be putting it in your body. Depending on how health conscious you are, that could be a no go moment for you. Grass fed and grass finished beef are your best bet for healthy tallow, so find some one in your area and see if you can get their fat when they butcher. Another option may be to buy into a beef co-op so that you could get some healthy, grass fed beef along with that tallow. Thanks and congratulations to Ashley. Great post. Thanks for sharing it with the From the Farm Blog Hop.
