If you take a look at the verses prior to this you find that Adam and Eve have sinned and as punishment God is driving them from the Garden of Eden, which was supposed to be theirs to care for. Did you notice what their next calling was? That’s right, farming. God sent Adam out to “till the ground from whence he was taken.” This could be viewed as a punishment but I don’t believe that was the case. God could have given them any number of tasks following their expulsion from the Garden, but he chose to have them farm the land for their food. God was showing them what happens when you don’t follow God’s direction. You have to work hard. But there are valuable lessons to be learned from farming the land as well. Lessons that all of mankind would need now that it was fallen. God reveals those lessons throughout the rest of his word. God is good. Have a great day and God bless!
