We’ve done so many projects around the farm that I thought it might be worthwhile to take a minute to update some things. You know, in case you are curious how things are holding up, or how the garden is growing, or how big the animals are getting. The first thing to update is the greenhouse. Unfortunately, the Texas spring/summer winds were just to much for the plastic to withstand given its southern exposure. The south wall took the brunt of the damage but once it was torn open, the rest of the plastic was not far behind. The good news? I have already started some great upgrades that are going to give us years of use. Using some repurposed patio sliding glass I have used two doors for the roof and two doors for the side walls. To finish closing them in I am using some salvaged corrugated tin. I have to admit that this is a total experiment. I fully expect that the side glass with hold up well as it is really no different that its original purpose other than the fact that it has been placed horizontally rather than vertically. The roof exposure is a different story. Although I am confident that it will hold up well even in small hail (it was designed for exterior use after all and is safety glass), there is a small part of me that is dreading the first hail storm. Worst case scenario though, the glass breaks and we clean it up so I have decided that the risk is worth the reward for now. I also have added a small sink with running water which is very handy to have in the greenhouse. Once I come across the right salvaged materials, I will finish closing in the ends of the greenhouse. The plastic is still sufficient on those two ends for now.
And finally, the goats are getting closer to kidding. We are very confident that three of the four girls are pregnant. The timing is a little off as we were hoping to time it to a little closer to the start of fall so that they wouldn’t be born during the heat of summer or the cold of winter without having some time to grow a little and be better equipped to handle weather changes. But we will take what the good Lord gives us. His timing is always better than ours. We will definitely update when it’s time to kid.
